Former member of PTI Chairman Advisory Committee and Central Tarbiyati Council Abdul Quayyum Khan Kundi issued a press statement in response to PM Nawaz Sharif request to religious scholars to develop a counter narrative.
PM Nawaz has made a request to religious scholars to develop a counter-narrative to fight extremism and fundamentalism but this alone will not be effective until and unless a major overhaul of the constitution of the country is conducted. 1973 constitution of Pakistan is divisive and many of its articles are in conflict with Islamic political thought as well as the founding ideals of the country. We need to amend the constitution so that it reflects the egalitarian spirit of Islam as well as offer complete freedom of expression, religion, association, and career. The Constitution should treat all citizens equally rather than divide them based on their religious affiliation and ethnic background. In the absence of a uniting and just social contract, the country cannot embark on the path of progress and prosperity.
