Change of fortune – large shale oil reserves found in Pakistan

According to the Energy Information Administration (EIA), a US government agency, there are large deposits of oil and gas in the Thar area of Pakistan. The report suggest that the shale gas reserves are around 105 trillion cubic feet while the oil reserves are estimated at 9 billion barrels. These estimates are much higher than earlier estimates of 24 trillion cubic feet of gas and 300 million barrels of oil.

Pakistan’s current production is around 4.2 billion cubic feet and 70000 barrels of oil a day. To start production from the new find Pakistan has to rely on international oil companies as shale oil expertise is limited to a handful of companies.
