Smart meters is one of the option: Ahsan Iqbal

Minister for Planning and Development Ahsan Iqbal informed the media that smart meters is one of the option to control electricity theft. He said that for sustainable provision of electricity theft has to be stopped. He said that a balance has to be created between revenue and expenses. He said that government is working on tax reform to take it up to 13-14% of GDP. He said that foreign direct investment (FDI) will be attracted to achieve growth targets and create more jobs. He said that future belongs to knowledge economies and we will actively pursue this objective for Pakistan.

He said that reforms will be introduced in the civil services hiring, promotion and training so that capable people are given more responsibilities. He said that today if a PM or CM wants to find out the top performing civil servants the system is not set up to provide this information.

He said that the economic corridor between Pakistan & China will revolutionize the whole region. He said that this corridor will integrate the four fastest growing regions of South Asia, China, Central Asia and Middle East. He said that Pakistan can play a significant role in the development of this trade zone.  Ahsan Iqbal commented that this corridor will affect the lives of 3 billion people residing in this region.

He said that key items of the government is to remove the energy deficit, value addition to exports, increase efficiency of the government departments and private-public partnership is important. He said that there is trust deficit between public and private sectors. He said that privatization program will be reinvigorated to involve private sector. He said that social capital is very important as the economic development require skilled labor as well as social cohesion between various groups. He said planning commission is the coordinator and liaison between all development plans of various departments. He said that government is preparing a long-term vision for 2025.
