Hockey team management sacked

Pakistan on Thursday sacked its manager, coach and selectors, while the entire squad offered to retire, after the four-time champions finished last at the men’s field hockey World Cup.
Pakistan, who won the World Cup in 1971, 1978, 1982 and 1994, had finished 11th in the 1986 edition in London. They were sixth in the last tournament in Germany in 2006.
Supreme Court order closure of torture cells

The Supreme Court on Thursday ordered the closure of police torture cells in private houses while a three-member bench headed by Justice Javed Iqbal has directed the Punjab government to issue show cause notices to the concerned DIGs, SPs in the police brutality case.
IMF will not delay aid

A delay in appointing a new Pakistani finance minister should not disrupt the delivery of assistance from the International Monetary Fund (IMF), former finance ministry chief said on Thursday.
Former Finance Minster Shaukat Tarin announced on Feb. 23 he was resigning to focus on his private business interests.
No replacement has been announced amid media reports that President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Yusuf Raza Gilani disagreed on who should be in charge of the portfolio.
Karzai seeking Pakistan’s support

The Afghan president welcomed Islamabad’s offers of support for Afghanistan’s efforts at reconciliation, saying Pakistan “has a significantly important role to play in that and Afghanistan would welcome that role”.
